COUNTRY FENCE ROW Hollihock (Alcea rosea) An old-time flower that once lined fence rows and ditches of farmsteads across America and Europe. Country Fence Row Heirloom Hollyhocks produce long spikes of large 4 to 5-inch white, pink, yellow, orange and burgundy flowers with delicately scalloped edges. Plants grow 5 to 8-feet-tall and bloom over a long period of time. Hollyhocks are biennials and therefore will not flower until the second year. Hollyhocks can also be sown indoors approximately 9 weeks before your final frost and transferred outdoors about 2-3 weeks after the final frost has passed.WHERE TO PLANT HOLLYHOCK SEEDSPlant hollyhocks, in moist, rich, and well-draining soil that gets full sun exposure – though they can tolerate Partial Shade. One of the significant causes of hollyhock failure is planting in soil that is too dry.HOW TO PLANT HOLLYHOCK SEEDSSoak your seeds beforehand in warm water for approximately 12 hours. Direct sow outdoors onto the surface of the soil and compress firmly, but do not cover. Hollyhocks require sunlight to germinate. If starting indoors, use tall, individual pots to transplant, as Hollyhocks have long taproots.HOW TO CARE FOR HOLLYHOCKHollyhocks are a short-lived perennial, tending to last about 2-3 years. This lifespan can be extended by removing flowers as soon as they fade. In non-tropical climates, you can cut your hollyhocks down and mulch in order to give them longer life as well. Hollyhocks can also be susceptible to rust, which will usually infect lower-growing leaves, but can spread upwards. Prevent rust by watering from below, and promoting good air circulation between your hollyhocks.SEED STORINGStore your seeds in a cool, dry and dark location. Most seeds have a long shelf life at least two years, but heat and moisture will cut that life short.Dedicate a drawer or cabinet to storing your seeds where you can also house your gardening journal close at hand for dreaming, planning and preparing. The flower stalks on hollyhocks can reach heights of 9 feet (2.7 m.) tall! They can tower above a garden, adding a lovely vertical element to your yard. Let’s look at a few tips on hollyhocks to help you grow them in your yard. How to Plant Hollyhocks The first thing to understand is how to plant hollyhocks. Hollyhocks need full sun and moist, rich, well drained soil. The mistake many novice hollyhock growers make is to plant this flower in soil that’s too dry. Soak your seeds beforehand in warm water for approximately 12 hours. Spring sown hollyhock seeds may flower the same year or next. Fall-sown seeds will flower the following year. Scatter seeds over soil, do not bury with more than ¼” of soil. Water to a depth of 2”. Expect germination in 10-14 days. Thin seedlings to 18-36 inches apart. Water seedlings and established hollyhocks when the soil surface dries out.Once you have planted your hollyhocks, they will need minimal care, but there are a few things you should be aware of when growing hollyhocks. Here are some tips on hollyhocks. First of all, hollyhocks are a short lived perennial. This means that most varieties will only live two to three years. Their lifespan can be extended some by removing growing hollyhock flowers as soon as they fade. If you live in a non-tropical region, cutting them back to the ground and mulching them will also help. The one benefit that comes from growing hollyhock flowers is that they easily reseed themselves. While they may be short lived, in their proper growing conditions they will continually grow more, which will keep the hollyhock flowers consistent in years to come.WE SHIP FAST & FREE!
