Plantain Banana Tree Saba Musa Plantation Fruit easy Quick shade get 20 ft tall

Sometimes called in Louisiana “plantation” bananas, these are not the common variety, but are very fast growing and get at least 20 ft. tall in a few weeks. The name comes from the tradition of growing them for shade at old plantations which is where these come from, but may also be referring to the name “plantain”.There are many varieties of bananas and plantains. The closest named variety is “Saba” a filpino variety but this one is not exactly a Saba. fresh live plant with or without leaves. the plant grows from the root ball.if you have a live root ball you have a tree. in late spring through summer there will be green top growth (stalk and leaves). sometimes the leaves are cut off for shipping and the plant will grow more. they can be successfully transplanted any time of year. I wholesale them to nurseries who sell them for $85+. They make big purple flowers which are edible and the bananas are sweet and edible raw but are commonly fried because they have a high starch content. They are also eaten boiled. There are tons of great recipes online. I brought some to a potluck and they disappeared fast. Banana trees can be shipped bare rooted and transplant easily any time of year. I will ship a baby tree called a “pup” which is an offshoot cut off the mother tree. It will be anywhere from 8″ to 24″ tall with roots. They grow VERY fast. 2-4″/ day is not unusual in warm weather. Growing bananas does not take much effort and Banana plants can offer many benefits: You can use them to cook with (the fruit and the flowers). They make great windbreaks or screens, They can keep the sun of the hot western side of your house, They utilize the water and nutrients in waste drains, washing water or outdoor shower. The leaves can be fed to horses, cows and other grazers, the dried remains of the trunks can be used for weaving baskets and mats. And most important they give you lots of bananas. Musa saba is the tallest banana but doesn’t take off until temperatures are in the upper 80s Where the ground freezes, they can be overwintered in the basement or crawl space much like a giant canna tuber. Just dig the whole plant up, cut off all the leaves except the still furled one, and let it rest. In the Spring, just plant it back out and it will get bigger and bigger every year. This is a way to reach fruiting size in northern areas. Almost every part of saba banana can be economically utilized. Fruit, when ripe is also eaten fresh as dessert but is usually eaten when cooked. It can be processed into a wide variety of food products such as banana flour, flakes, ketchup, wine, vinegar, and the popular banana chips. A food dehydrator will make banana chips. The inflorescence (flower) is consumed as vegetable. The leaves are used as wrapping and decorative materials. The pseudostem is chopped finely, cooked and used as feed for hogs, cattle, and poultry. The most versatile of all banana varieties , the saba is cooked into a wide range of snacks and desserts. Diet watchers would find a healthy snack in a boiled saba, as the starch in it quickly induces a feeling of satiety. The starch also provides the body with protection against colon cancer. Saba can be grown in nearly all kinds of soil but deep and friable loam soil with good drainage and aeration offers higher production and better fruit quality. fertilize bananas using any type of high nitrogen organic fertilizer or compost. They like potassium and you can put wood ashes on them with good results. Bananas are heavy feeders so many growers fertilize every couple of months after they are established. All I do is give them wood ashes and they do very well. . Grow bananas in BRIGHT LIGHT. 12 hours of bright light are ideal for most varieties. bananas prefer Constant WARMTH this is very important – the ideal night temperature would be 67 F. The day temperatures would be in the 80s If you are in a more northern climate you may bring them during the winter. rhizome / rootball and all, remove the leaves and store the plant, dry, in a heated area over winter. To assure survival, it is easier to dig small suckers, severed very close to the parent rhizome, and pot them for overwintering indoors. Spacing should be at around 4′ this will produce a stand or patch. Broad, long, graceful leaves and rapid growth-commonly reaching full size in just a few weeks-make banana a favorite plant for providing a tropical look to pool and patio areas. The development of bananas following a frost-free winter is a source of both pride and amazement to those unfamiliar with banana culture. Bananas are a tropical herbaceous plant consisting of an underground corm and a trunk (pseudostem) comprised of concentric layers of leaf sheaths. At 10 to 15 months after the emergence of a new plant. There are thousands of banana varieties and species and can reach 50’tall banana flowers appear in groups (hands) along the stem and are covered by purplish bracts which roll back and shed as the fruit stem develops. The first hands to appear contain female flowers which will develop into bananas (usually seedless in edible types). The number of hands of female flowers varies from a few to more than 10, after which numerous hands of sterile flowers appear and shed in succession, followed by numerous hands of male flowers which also shed. Generally, a bract rolls up and sheds to expose a new hand of flowers almost daily. It is recommended that bananas be planted in patches or groves, the idea is to place them together in a stand. The shade from a stand of bananas is generally cooler than regular shade, a well placed hammock will do nicely on a hot summer day. After fruiting, the mother plant which bore should be cut off near ground level, as it can never produce again. The old trunk will quickly decompose if cut into three or four pieces, with each piece then being split lengthwise. Use the remains in a mulch bed or compost heap. After a major cold period in which there is no doubt that bananas were killed to the ground, cut the plants off at ground level within a couple of weeks of the freeze. Dead bananas are not very attractive and they are much easier to cut off before decomposition starts. banana leaves can be removed after they break and hang down along the trunk. Most production north of the lower Rio Grande Valley occurs in the spring and summer following a particularly mild winter. Bananas can be propagated from pups which are the off shoots from mature plants. These off shoots will form new Rhizomes thus creating a new plant Track Page Views With Auctiva’s FREE Counter

Why I sell rhizomes (underground tubers from which plants are propagated) instead of plants with green growth and leaves. Ginger grown from rhizomes establishes plants quicker than if small plants are transplanted. The energy in a nice fresh rhizome will make a bigger plant faster than if you buy a little plant in a 4″ pot because the rhizome already IS a big plant (it just hasnt yet put out top growth). Rhizomes divisions dont suffer transplant stress like plants with leaves do.
