Blue Poppy Seeds – 4 oz. The classic grey-blue poppy seed that has comforted you in pound cakes, perked your dull morning senses in bagels smeared with cream cheese, and made your Bubbie’s rugelach so darn addicting. Poppy Seeds are small, nutty-tasting seeds, mostly used in baked goods for color, texture and mild, floral and earthy flavor. The nutty flavor of blue poppy seed is fantastic when used for muffins, cakes, bread, or cookies. Cooked in milk, these seeds turn a gorgeous shade of blue and so does the milk. All Natural, Gluten-Free, Kosher Parve, Non-GMO The opium poppy is the very same poppy that gives us the delicious seeds we use in muffins and vinaigrettes. Its scientific name, Papafer somniferum, means “sleep-inducing poppy,” which comes from the poppy seed pod’s latex that is around 12% morphine. (If you’ve never put it together before, this is why it’s a field of poppies that put poor Dorothy Gale and her companions to sleep.) While the opium-rich latex within the poppy possesses high levels of narcotics, the actual seeds do not. The seeds have a long rich history and were never harvested for themselves, but as a byproduct of opium production. The flavor is somewhat nutty and even a bit citric, and their pinprick crunch is highly valued in baked goods. Blue poppy seeds are produced throughout Europe and possess a distinct almond flavor as opposed to the mellower taste of white and brown poppy seeds. Poppy seeds must be toasted or baked before their flavor to be at their peak. Due to their high oil and protein content poppy seeds tend to go rancid quickly so be sure to purchase them in small quantities. Store them in an airtight container in a dark and dry place, but toss after six months. 10 Lantern Banksia “Fireworks” Seeds (Banksia ericifolia)”Dwarf Little Eric” Exotic Flowering Plant *RARE*Banksia ericifolia (Heath-leaved Banksia) is undoubtedly the most beautiful banksias in Australia, with its large striking spikes of yellow to reddish-orange flowers contrasted with small, linear, light-green to greyish-green leaves. Not only is it the most colorful of the eastern Banksia species when in flower, it is also one of the best plants for attracting honey-eating birds and makes an interesting addition to any garden of Australian character. It also makes a Great Indoor Houseplant. Banksia ericifolia ‘Fireworks’ (Fireworks Heath Banksia) – A large upright shrub to 8 feet tall by 6 feet wide with narrow 1/2 long leaves that are dark green on the upper surface and silvery below. In winter through spring into summer it has a magnificiant display of tall candle-like golden cones with red styles. Plant in full sun in a well-drained soil and irrigate only occasionally to very little – a drought tolerant plant. This plant is frost tolerant and has proven hardy to just below 20 °F at the Australian National Botanic Garden at Canberra and it may prove even hardier. It should also prove quite tolerant to windy exposed seaside gardens as it is a selection of a species that is native to sandstone and coastal areas along the coast of Queensland and New South Wales. Plant as a bold specimen plant or group as a screen. This plant is quite tough and noted as tolerant of a wide range of soil condition but where too alkaline, watch for iron deficiencies. The name for the genus is one given by Carolus Linnaeus to honor the English botanist Sir Joseph Banks, who was on Captain James Cook’s first expedition to Australia and collected the first Banksia specimens in 1770.Zones 8a-10Banksia Germination:1) Fill pots with a well draining seed starting mix.2) Use a heated propagator to keep the soil temperature at 72 degrees F.3) Lightly cover the seeds with 1/8 inch of Vermiculite.
