CHAENOMELES SPECIOSA, Flowering Quince
The Flowering Quince is an heirloom Deciduous flowering shrub often seen in gardens of historic homes across the country. Chaenomeles tolerate poor soil and are quite drought resistant. This makes them easy to care for and nearly indestructible once established. However, moderate watering is appreciated weekly in the heat of summer. Leafy, vibrant blooms will appear on old growth and are most prevalent in full sun. The Blooms are the main attraction of this ornamental bloomer to both humans and pollinators. So, you can leave them unpruned for the butterflies and bees or prune some of the flowering branches for an indoor centerpiece. Fun Fact: It can be purchased by Bonzai lovers for use indoors as well. “Texas Scarlet” is a newer variety that is compact and spreads to 3ftx3ft. It flowers in early spring with a profuse display of dark red flowers, then puts on its bright green leaves during the summer. With its compact growth habit, it is perfect for borders or for massing in groups of three or five. Spitfire” is a beautiful variety to 5ftx5ft. making it much easier to include in gardens where the old-fashioned varieties grew too large. It is a beautiful deciduous shrub with dark green leaves and vivid red flowers that cover the stems. The “Jet Trail” variety will grow 3-4ft both tall and wide with a dense and bushy branch structure with 1.5” white flowers. “Cameo” is a hard-to-find variety with dark green leathery leaves on an upright shrub growing to 6ft tall. Its double apricot-pink flowers that appear in the spring are what make this variety of the quince so sought after. The “Toyo Nishiki” is prized in many countries due to its multi-color blooms! Unlike its monocolored siblings, the Toyo Nishiki puts on red, white, and pink flowers that emerge on stems before the leaves, in the spring. It has dark green leaves with growth to 6ft making it a great backdrop or hedge when grouped along a fence line. ———Colorado Hardy Plants are just that… hardy! Yucca Glauca (Soapweed Yucca, Prairie, Spanish Bayonet, Bear Grass)
Soapweed yucca is an evergreen shrub that grows up to three feet high. In June, mature yucca plants shoot up a 2 to 5-foot tall stalk which soon displays creamy-white flowers. Their natural habitat is dry rocky soils and often found in short grass prairies and desert grasslands. If you’ve ever done any wondering in the Great Plains, you have surely stumbled upon this distinct member of the Agave family. These drought-tolerant rock stars have adapted to xeric growth conditions and thrive in arid climates due to their robust root system. Their tap roots can reach 20 feet deep and they also establish an extensive system of lateral roots that can extend up to 30 feet. Also called Narrowleaf Yucca, Spanish Bayonet, and Beargrass, this Yucca variety is an important plant for wildlife. It provides food and nesting for small mammals, birds, and reptiles. The flowers attract butterflies. Also, it is a host plant for the Yucca Moth. This moth and the Yucca go hand-in-hand because neither one can live without the other. However, what these plants are truly known for are their medicinal and utilitarian uses. The most common is soap, as the name suggests. Just crush up some of its root and add a bit of water and voila, a lather will appear that makes a good soap or shampoo. Some even claim this shampoo kills lice, eliminates dandruff, and prevents baldness. Some even use this “soap” on poison ivy to help soothe the sting. Additionally, the roots can be pulverized and stewed in water to help with upset stomachs or in a bath to help with sprains. Or, you can bring out your creative side by weaving the dried leaves into a basket of fancy footwear.
