Fouquieria splendens is a Cactus or succulent in the Fourquieriaceae family. It is commonly known as Ocotillo American Spanish, coachwhip, vine cactus, desert coral, slim wood, Jacob’s staff, Jacob cactus, and candlewood. It is a plant indigenous in the Southwestern United States. While it may look dead for parts of the hotter season, it comes to life once it rains. It can grow to 30 feet tall and 10 feet wide. The flowers are bright crimson and displayed at the ends of each stem. A drought-tolerant plant that will grow in most soils. Zones 8-11 Germination Sow in a mixture of sand (2/3) and potting soil (1/3). Cover with plastic and poke a few tiny pin holes. Let the seeds germinate with a lot of light, at 75-85F, and in constantly humid soil. Germination after a few weeks.
