It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. It is widely used as an ornamental. It can grow to 50 feet tall with a robust trunk. The bluish-green leaves reach out 3-7 feet and are 3 feet wide. It forms a shag around the trunk like many palms and are cut off to keep a clean appearance. The fragrant inflorescence reaches 15 feet long, falling toward the ground in February and March. The fruits start green and turn yellow-brown when ripe. The fruits are about an inch in diameter. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with little water needs. Zones 9-11 Germination Soak seeds for 48 hours in warm water. Sow seeds 2″ deep, then tamp seeds into the soil and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 3-5 months.
Brahea Armata Blue Hesper Palm Tree (8 Seeds) Rare
Brahea Armata Blue Hesper Palm Tree (8 Seeds) Rare This palm has a solitary greyish trunk that is closely ringed and capped with a rounded crown of bluish-green fan-like fronds with stiff spiny stalks. It has small yellow bell-shaped flowers that appear in a long pendulous cluster during summer. Mexican blue palm, Brahea armata, is native to Mexico. It has stiff, fan-shaped foliage in an attractive blue-grey-green. The flowers are incredible inflorescences up to 5m in length that hang above and over the foliage as a cascading tassel. It’s perfect for growing as part of a tropical border, alongside other tropical plants such as banana and canna. It’s also suited to indoor or conservatory growing, and is well suited to growing in a large container.Grow Brahea armata in a sheltered spot in well-drained, alkaline soil in full sun. Mature plants are hardy enough for a temperate climate but young plants will need protection in winter. Alternatively, grow in a pot as a conservatory specimen and take outdoors in summer. Seed Propagation Seed – best sown as soon as it is ripe in containers. Germination of fresh seed usually takes place in 3 – 4 months at 25°c. Stored seed is very slow to germinate. Pre-soaking the seed for 24 hours in warm water prior to sowing may shorten the germination time. Plants form a long tap-root some time before forming a shoot so it is best to sow 2 – 3 seeds per deep pot. Plant them out into their permanent positions as soon as possible.
