Fresh cut hardwood logs should be used to prevent competitor fungi although it is best to allow the log to rest, off the ground after fresh cutting for 2-3 weeks prior to plugging.The drill bits are approx 8.5mm wide and 25mm deep (apprx 5/16″X1″) with a stop collar for perfect depth and speed. They have been newly redesigned to fit in a drill chuck, and also a quick attach as well as for faster drilling speed. The plugged holes are then commonly sealed over with wax although some people have success without this step.
