It is popular as a shade tree for lawns or as an urban street tree and it grows quickly to 40 to 60 feet in height and 40 feet wide. The dense sharply toothed dark green leaves of summer, bright yellow leaves of fall, and smooth gray bark add beauty to the landscape year-round. The fruit is a small hard brown nutlet with 3-lobed bracts and appears from September to October. Zones: 4 to 8Mature Height: 40 ft. – 60 feetMature Spread:30 to 40 feetMedicinal use of : The leaves are hemostatic. They are used in external compresses to stop bleeding and heal wounds. A distilled water made from the leaves is an effective eye lotion. The leaves are harvested in August and dried for later use. The plant is used in Bach flower remedies – the keywords for prescribing it are “Tiredness”, “Weariness” and “Mental and physical exhaustion”. Other uses of : Plants can be grown as a medium to tall hedge, they retain their dead leaves throughout the winter if clipped at least once a year in late summer. They should not be clipped in spring since they will bleed profusely. A yellow dye is obtained from the bark. Wood – heavy, close grained, hard, very tough, very durable, not very durable according to another report. Used for flooring, cogs, tools, piano mechanisms etc. A good fuel. Sowing Carpinus betulusSeeds Foliage turns yellow to orange in fall. Fruit is a ribbed nutlet that is borne at the base of a leafy bract. Leafy bracts hang in clusters. Fruit matures in September through October.

American Hornbeam ( Carpinus caroliniana) is a deciduous tree, native to the eastern USA. It is a medium size tree growing to 30 feet with a spread of 20 – 30 feet. The extremely hard wood of this tree will take a strong polish and was once used by early Americans to make bowls, tool handles, and other such things that demanded very hard wood. American Hornbeam works great for naturalized areas, along streams and ponds, as well as urban settings. Older bark is slate gray with a muscle appearance. Plants are grown in a trade 1 gallon container with a well developed root system. We do not ship into the following states: AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, OR, P.R., WA. We are a licensed nursery in the state of Tennessee.
