St John’s Wort is a perennial herb that’s beloved by gardeners everywhere! Its Latin name Hypericum perforatum comes from its characteristic perforated leaves; if you hold them up to the sun, you can almost see right through them. In medieval times, people believed St John’s Wort had magical qualities – they hung wreaths of its leaves over windows and doorways to ward off evil spirits and protect against lightning strikes. Nowadays, St Johns Wort isn’t used for warding away supernatural visitors, but it’s still just as useful!
