Each 12 inch rhizome order is a total of at least 12 inches long (ie:may be 2/ 6″ pieces) ready to plant and start growth .They grow quickly and are much easier and less expensive than the potted plants! Rhizomes have at least 2 viable root buds each. Rhizomes should be planted about 3″ deep and 2′ apart. Grow it yourself and SAVE!! A beautiful choice ornamental with small green leaves contrasting strikingly with the jet-black culms. Black bamboo is one of the more popular and desirable of the ornamental bamboos. The plant (Hale variety) is hardy to 0* F in zones 6 to 11 + and can be mulched deep north of zone 8 to keep it from a killing freeze. They grow up to 30 feet and make a wonderful decorative barrier or windbreak. The base of the canes can reach 2+ inches in dia. Harvested they can be treated like wood. You can make fence, gates, furniture, screens, poles or pot for outdoor or indoor use. Some clones of Black Bamboo have better black color than others. The “Hale” clone is highly valued for the consistency of its coloration, its smaller size, and its cold hardiness. Size: Hale variations can grow to 20 feet and is a smaller, more cold tolerant variant of the principal form. Typical size in the Southeast is 15-20 feet with 1-inch diameter culms. One of the least aggressive running bamboos. Culms are usually about 1.5 inches in diameter and are strikingly attractive. Description: A medium-sized bamboo with segmented culms that are green at first, and then turn black by the end of the first summer. The foliage of Black Bamboo is not nearly as dense as that of other bamboos in the genus Phyllostachys. Fairly common throughout the Southeast,though usually somewhat expensive. Culture: Plant in light to medium shade in a well-drained soil. Will grow in full sun with irrigation and good care. Grows slowly in deep shade. Shipped with damp newspaper and damp peat moss. They are so vigorous sometimes they grow in the package The rhizomes will sprout from the viable buds in the warm weather. During the winter they are storing energy underground. Please mark where they are planted and keep moist (not wet), until the buds shoot (sprout) which they do in spring. How to start growing bamboo Use a plant or rhizome and not seeds! Seeds are rarely viable. Lay the rhizome horizontally in a pot or in a trench with the buds facing up. Have a layer of potting soil in the pot or some compost in the trench. Place the side where the stalks of bamboo grow face-up. If there is some of the stalk attached to the rhizome, keep those ends out of the soil. Cover the rhizome with 3 inches of potting soil. Press on the soil firmly so it has complete contact with the rhizome.Water the soil with a watering can. The soil should be deeply moist, but there should not be any muddy water on the surface. Stick your finger into the soil down to the second knuckle to make sure that the soil is damp.Check the moistness of your soil every other day with your finger. If it feels dry, water the rhizome until the soil is damp, but not drenched.Too much water will cause the rhizome to rot. Do not overwater the soil.Create temporary shade till established 4. If in containers,Keep the pots in the shade for 4-6 weeks or create temporary shade where planted. Keep it out of direct sunlight. The best place to keep it is next to a shady exterior wall or under the cover of a large tree or create some shade with a cardboard box or a shade canopy. Bamboo buds shoot in the Spring.
