250 LEMON BALM SEEDS (Melissa officinalis) NonGMO Variety Lemon balm, balm, common balm, or balm mint, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the mint family Lamiaceae and native to south-central Europe, the Mediterranean Basin, Iran, and Central Asia, but now naturalized in the Americas and elsewhere. It grows to a maximum height of 70–150 cm. The leaves have a mild lemon scent similar to mint. During summer, small white flowers full of nectar appear. It is not to be confused with bee balm (genus Monarda), although the white flowers attract bees, hence the genus Melissa (Greek for “honey bee”). The leaves are used as a herb, in teas, and also as a flavouring. The plant is used to attract bees for honey production. It is grown as an ornamental plant and for its oil (to use in perfumery). The tea of lemon balm, the essential oil, and the extract are used in traditional and alternative medicine, including aromatherapy. The plant has been cultivated at least since the 16th century, but research is still being conducted to establish the safety and effects of lemon balm. The plant is used to attract bees to make honey. It is also grown and sold as an ornamental plant. The essential oil is used as a perfume ingredient, but the plant has other culinary and medicinal uses. Lemon balm is used in some toothpastes.Lemon balm is used as a flavouring in ice cream and herbal teas, both hot and iced, often in combination with other herbs such as spearmint. It is a common addition to peppermint tea, mostly because of its complementing flavor.Lemon balm is also paired with fruit dishes or candies. 500 Lemon Balm Seeds, Melissa Officinalis, Tea, Medicinal, Non-GMO, Genuine USA
Test Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) Check out our other listings! Lemon Balm is a perennial herb native to southern Europe. This member of the mint family is cultivated mainly here in the United States where it has become a favorite of home gardeners due to its appeal to bees and for its many culinary and medicinal uses. In the kitchen, Lemon Balm can be trimmed and added directly to salads, soups, and sauces, or dried for use in tea. Lemon Balm’s use as a medicinal is just as varied, as historically it has been used to reduce stress anxiety, and irritation, to ease nausea and stomach cramping, and to improve memory retention. Lemon Balm Germination Guide Lemon Balm seeds can be sown indoors or outdoors. Because the seeds are so small we recommend starting them inside. If starting indoors, select the soil and container in which to start your seeds. For soil, use a seed starting mix for the best results. You may also use a soil-less potting mix, which is cheaper and widely available at most garden centers. For the container, use seed trays or small pots around three or four inches tall. Fill your pots or seed trays with potting mix to within 1/2 inch of the top. Scatter 3 to 5 seeds per seed tray cell or pot on top of the soil. Lemon Balm seeds require light to germinate, so sow them no deeper than 1/4 inch into the starter mix. Place the trays/pots on a sunny windowsill or, ideally, beneath a grow light. You can even place them beneath a fluorescent light if a grow light is not available. The seeds germinate best when soil temperatures are between 65°F and 70°F. Water the seeds lightly. Lemon Balm does not tolerate over-saturated soil very well, so water only enough to keep the starting mix slightly moist. Germination should occur within 5 to 9 days, but it may take longer if indoor temperatures are cooler. Once the seedlings have developed their second set of true leaves, you may transplant them to larger containers or directly into your garden. Once established, Lemon Balm is a hardy plant that tolerates both heat and cold very well.
