Mosquitoes have been shown to avoid lemongrass because of the strong citrus like smell it possesses.* Lemongrass is grown as an annual in cool regions, and as a perennial in warmer areas. It’s season can also be extended if brought indoors during winter to grow in a container or pot.* To use lemongrass as a mosquito repellent, just place the plants around the perimeter of the space you want to exclude mosquitoes. For example, you’d want to place the lemongrass around a patio, deck or any other outdoor space.* This highly ornamental, medicinal perennial grass is native to Thailand, India, Burma and Sri Lanka. It is also called Cochin grass or Malabar Grass.* The essential oil that is extracted is being studied for its anti-cancer inhibiting abilities. In addition, the extracted essential oil has anti-bacterial activity and has even been shown to halt the growth of the deadly strain MRSA!* Lemongrass has a citrus flavor and is used extensively in a variety of cuisines including Thai, Vietnamese and Indian dishes among others. In case some roots are lost, the stalks can still be planted as long as enough roots remain. If needed, you can place the stalk in a glass of room temperature water (1-1.5 inches) for 5-7 days until new roots start to grow, then proceed to plant as usual.
