Test Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) Check out our other listings! Lemon Balm is a perennial herb native to southern Europe. This member of the mint family is cultivated mainly here in the United States where it has become a favorite of home gardeners due to its appeal to bees and for its many culinary and medicinal uses. In the kitchen, Lemon Balm can be trimmed and added directly to salads, soups, and sauces, or dried for use in tea. Lemon Balm’s use as a medicinal is just as varied, as historically it has been used to reduce stress anxiety, and irritation, to ease nausea and stomach cramping, and to improve memory retention. Lemon Balm Germination Guide Lemon Balm seeds can be sown indoors or outdoors. Because the seeds are so small we recommend starting them inside. If starting indoors, select the soil and container in which to start your seeds. For soil, use a seed starting mix for the best results. You may also use a soil-less potting mix, which is cheaper and widely available at most garden centers. For the container, use seed trays or small pots around three or four inches tall. Fill your pots or seed trays with potting mix to within 1/2 inch of the top. Scatter 3 to 5 seeds per seed tray cell or pot on top of the soil. Lemon Balm seeds require light to germinate, so sow them no deeper than 1/4 inch into the starter mix. Place the trays/pots on a sunny windowsill or, ideally, beneath a grow light. You can even place them beneath a fluorescent light if a grow light is not available. The seeds germinate best when soil temperatures are between 65°F and 70°F. Water the seeds lightly. Lemon Balm does not tolerate over-saturated soil very well, so water only enough to keep the starting mix slightly moist. Germination should occur within 5 to 9 days, but it may take longer if indoor temperatures are cooler. Once the seedlings have developed their second set of true leaves, you may transplant them to larger containers or directly into your garden. Once established, Lemon Balm is a hardy plant that tolerates both heat and cold very well. Lemon Balm – 100 Seeds – Medicinal & Culinary Herb – Heirloom – GMO Free
Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) – 100 Seeds Description:Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a perennial herbaceous plant in the mint family Lamiaceae and native to south-central Europe, the Mediterranean Basin, Iran, and Central Asia, but now naturalized in the Americas and elsewhere. It grows to a maximum height of 70–150 cm (28–59 in). The leaves have a mild lemon scent similar to mint. During summer, small white flowers full of nectar appear. It is not to be confused with bee balm (genus Monarda), although the white flowers attract bees, hence the genus Melissa (Greek for “honey bee”). Culinary Properties:Lemon balm is a wonderful addition to fruit salads, herb butters, fruit drinks, and sorbets. It can also be used in many egg dishes, custards, a variety of soups and casseroles. Lemon Balm makes a great addition for stuffing for poultry, lamb or pork. Its subtle flavor is perfect for sauces and marinades for fish. Medicinal Properties:Today, lemon balm is used in traditional medicine as both a sleep aid and digestive tonic. It can be consumed as a tea, taken as a supplement or extract, or applied to the skin in balms and lotion. Lemon balm essential oil is also popular in aromatherapy, where it is believed to promote calmness and ease stress. Growing Instructions:To start lemon balm indoors in a flat, sow on the surface of soil about 6 weeks before the last frost; provide moderate heat, but keep away from the hottest rays of sunlight. For best results, water lightly with a spray bottle or something similar. Transplant outdoors as soon as the seedlings grow big enough to handle, or after the last spring frost. To direct sow after the last frost, plant the seeds on the surface of the soil and keep it evenly moist until germination, which should take place within 2-3 weeks. Lemon balm prefers well drained or sandy soil and partial shade, but can grow in full sun. With proper handling, lemon balm grows well in containers. Shipping:All orders are shipped USPS First Class with tracking at a flat rate whether you buy 1 seed order or 100.
