Test Bolivian Criollo Tobacco Check out our other listings! Bolivian Criollo Black is a dark tobacco that has similar characteristics to burley. A vigorous grow and heavy producer, the plants can grow up to 8 feet in height and produce an average of 26 to 28 harvestable leaves. Leaves are very sticky and grow to about 14 to 16 inches in width and 30 to 36 inches in length. They turn from light green to yellow as they ripe and easily air cure to a light brown. Flavor is similar to medium strength burly. Can be used as a pipe tobacco or blended with other tobaccos for use in cigarettes or as cigar filler. 75 days to maturity. Tobacco Germination Guide Select the soil and container in which to start your seeds. For soil, use a seed starting mix for the best results. You may also use a soil-less potting mix, which is cheaper and widely available at most garden centers. For the container, use seed trays or small pots around three or four inches tall. Fill your pots or seed trays with potting mix to within 1/2 inch of the top. Thoroughly soak the soil with water and allow the excess water drain off before planting. Place 2-3 seeds per seed tray cell or pot on top of the soil. Tobacco seeds require light for germination, so do not cover them with soil. Cover the trays or pots with plastic or a seeding dome to increase humidity and raise the temperature of the soil, then place the trays/pots on a sunny windowsill or beneath a grow light. The seeds will germinate quicker when the soil temperature is between 70 to 80°F. Water the seeds whenever the top of layer of soil appears dry. Be careful not to overwater, and take care not to move/wash away the seeds when watering. To avoid any potential issues, consider watering from the bottom or lightly misting the soil with water from a spray bottle. Remove the plastic or seed dome from the the pots/trays once the seedlings have germinated. Once the seedlings reach about 3 inches in height you may transplant them to bigger pots or directly into your garden. If transplanting to your garden, select an area that receives partial to full sunlight. Space the seedlings 12-26 inches apart, in rows that are 36-60 inches apart. Water thoroughly after transplanting, daily until plants are established, and 2 to 3 times per week thereafter. The new cultivar, which is also resistant to black shank, black root rot, wildfire, and most strains of potato virus Y, was developed at the Tobacco Experiment Station in Greeneville. TN 86 is a medium-to-late-maturing cultivar at about 80 days, that has more leaves and a more upright growth habit than other burley cultivars. Extensive testing throughout Tennessee and surrounding states has demonstrated that TN 86 is widely adaptable. TN 86 has substantially out-yielded other burley cultivars in areas that have heavy infestations of TVMV or TEV diseases. The cured leaf is generally reddish-tan in color and has consistently sold for prices comparable to or higher than those for other cultivars. How to Grow Tobacco Growing your own tobacco is so easy and not dissimilar to growing tomatoes. Place commercial seedling compost into a tray and soak the soil with water and allow the excess water to drain off. Sprinkle the tobacco seeds onto the surface of the damp soil. Do not cover the seeds, as they need light for germination. Tobacco seeds are very tiny, so be careful to spread the seeds as evenly as possible. Keep the soil damp being careful not to wash the seeds around when you water; better still water from below or use a mist sprayer. At a temperature of 75-80 degrees, seeds typically take a matter of days to germinate; though at this stage they are still rather small. At lower temperatures, the germination simply takes a few days longer. Plantlets are ready to be transplanted into bigger pots, when the leaves are about 1cm in length. Care should be taken not to disturb the roots. Feed should only be given to established and rapidly growing plants after they have been replanted. Tobacco requires a lot of nitrogen and potash, which can be supplied using standard garden fertilizer. You may want to grow your tobacco using only organic fertilizers. Ideally, space the tobacco plants about 2 ft. apart in rows 3 ft. apart. Transplant outside in the evening or when it is cloudy and overcast to avoid the youngsters from drying out. Water plants thoroughly after transplanting and water daily until plants become established. Like tomato plants, the branches (suckers, offshoots), should be removed to focus the plants energy on the large leaves. Tobacco plants generally require full to partial sunlight to grow properly. Tobacco is ready to be harvest after 60-90 days after germinating.
