Mature Specimen Pine Bonsai Tree – Jack Pine 15-20 Years Thick Trunk Styled

This tree has been fully wired twice and is trained for bonsai. It is growing out this year and only has a few wires left on branches. Wiring of the pads can be done this year or next. The true front of this tree is in the second picture. I re-potted it at this angle about a year ago. It has plenty of main branches for developed pads. It comes in a frost resistant mica pot. Trunk is a little over 2” at the base. The needles have been reduced to very small clusters over the years.

Pinus thunbergii ‘Thunderhead’, commonly known as Thunderhead Japanese Black Pine, is a striking and compact conifer that adds a dramatic touch to any garden. This shrubby, slow-growing cultivar of the Japanese Black Pine is native to the coastal areas of Japan and South Korea, and was first selected as a seedling at Angelica Nursery in Maryland in 1987. Its dense, dark green needles and unique form have earned it the prestigious Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merit in 2012 for its exceptional beauty and hardiness. ‘Thunderhead’ is characterized by its densely packed needles, which are 3.5″-4.5″ long and a deep, lustrous green. These needles provide a beautiful contrast to the tree’s silver-white candles that emerge in winter and spring, creating a striking visual effect. As the seasons progress, the tree develops 3″ long, oval, brown cones that add to its ornamental appeal. This cultivar has an irregular, spreading habit when young, gradually maturing into a broadly pyramidal form. It grows at a moderate rate of 6″-9″ per year, reaching a height of 5.5′-6′ in 10 years, and eventually attaining a mature size of 10′-15′ high and 8′-10′ wide. ‘Thunderhead’ thrives in full sun and prefers well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (5.0-7.0). It is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including clay, silt, loam, and sand, as long as the soil is not waterlogged. Once established, ‘Thunderhead’ becomes drought-tolerant, requiring minimal watering except during extended periods of heat and drought. This cultivar is also resistant to deer, disease, and rabbits, and can tolerate salt and coastal exposure, making it an excellent choice for a wide range of garden environments. ‘Thunderhead’ is perfect as a specimen plant, in rock gardens, Asian gardens, or as part of a conifer grouping. It also works well in containers, as a hedge, or as a privacy screen. Its compact size and striking foliage make it a versatile addition to any landscape. Complement ‘Thunderhead’ with companion plants that share similar growing conditions, such as Japanese maple, dogwood, and redbud, which provide contrasting shapes and textures. Colorful shrubs like weigela, barberry, and viburnum can add visual interest, while a columnar tree like Stowe Pillar white pine or Sky Pencil holly, combined with low-growing junipers, can create a harmonious mixed planting. Introduce Pinus thunbergii ‘Thunderhead’ to your garden and enjoy its dynamic presence, stunning foliage, and enduring beauty for years to come.
