Only a healthy plant will give you good tissue from which to start a plant. The plant should also be well hydrated. The cells in the tissue will need moisture to begin knitting together and creating a root system but the cutting cannot remain too wet or it will rot. Desiccated tissue will not provide good root cells. Taking the Cutting Once you have a good specimen you need to consider the implement. A very sharp blade will prevent damage to the parent plant and to the cutting’s rooting edge. The item should also be very clean to minimize introducing any pathogen to either part. Starting plant cuttings is very easy but you must follow a few rules to make certain the potential baby plant has every advantage. Medium to Root Plant from Cutting A soilless media is the best starting mix for starting plant cuttings. The mixture should be loose, well draining and have plenty of oxygen movement for newly forming roots. You can start cuttings in perlite, vermiculite, sand, or a combination of peat moss, and any of the previous items. How to Root Cuttings Rooting plant cuttings may or may not benefit from rooting hormone. The container should be deep enough to support the new root depth. Rose of Sharon is easy to grow, even for beginning gardeners. Hardy in USDA zones 5-9, rose of Sharon bushes are tolerant of a wide range of conditions, including poor soil, heat, humidity, drought and air pollution. Plants have a graceful vase-shaped habit, with small attractive green leaves that are toothed, with no significant fall color. Color -as pictured, vivid fuchsia pink with darker centers. If ordering by mail, I take special care in packaging my plants. They will get on the road fully hidrated and wrapped in hidrogel to weather a few days inside the box. Depending on when you order, they may or may not have leaves. Or drop leaves in the box. This is nothing to be concerned about. Our main priority is to provide these babies an excellent planting conditions to establish strong roots now, so they can jump straight into vegetative growth comes spring:-) PLANTING & CARING FOR ROSE OF SHARON Space plants 6-10 feet as individual specimens, or 4-6’ if creating a hedge or privacy screen. How to plant: Follow these steps to plant rose of Sharon. – Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and 2 times wider. – Remove the plant gently from its container and the plant into the hole with the top of the root ball at soil level or slightly above. – Back fill the hole with soil and tamp down slightly to remove air pockets. – Water well. – Mulch with a layer of shredded bark to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Soil: Rose of Sharon aren’t fussy about soil type or pH; any well-drained soil will do. Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring by applying a granular rose fertilizer. Reapply each spring. First year I personally prefer Osmocote 14-14-14 slow release as it’s proven not burn the young still tender roots. Plant will arrive already with it applied. You do not want to feed your hibiscus until spring. Pruning: Rose of Sharon needs little to no regular pruning. If you wish to prune, however, late winter or early spring is the best time to do so. Up to one-third of the plant can be removed at a time. Next spring you can chose which shape direction you wish your plant to go. To turn it into a TREE- remove all newly grown side branches along the trunk except the biggest few at the top you wish to become the canopy of future tree. Once it reaches desirable hight, clip the top. New lateral branches will form. Keep clipping every year after it’s done blooming to form the shape you like it to be. Keep the lower trunk free of small growth. To turn it into the SHRUB- clip 1/3 off the top of all vertical branches , or cut them even, just above the leaf nodules after new greens are well formed. At the place of each cut, new buds will form a split to produce more branches and thicken the canopy. Depending on where you live, it may only take 2-3 years to reach the desired result. Always use clean cutting tools. Wipe with alcohol after trimming each tree. Water. Keep hydrated for the first couple of weeks. It’s best for it to meet winter well hydrated, so the root doesn’t dry out when ground freezes. Please remember, first year after transplant is the time to establish strong roots and stretch out. You have plenty of slow release fertilizer at the to get it a good kick start. HOW TO USE ROSE OF SHARON IN YOUR LANDSCAPE This versatile shrub can be used in many ways.
