Elbon Rye – A great crop cover also the hardiest seeds for food plots or mixes. Rye is a winter annual pasture grass and an excellent cover crop. Elbon Rye has good fall and spring growth and is more winter-hardy than wheat or oats. Elbon Rye puts on much growth in winter when temperatures are above freezing. Although slightly less attractive than wheat or oats, it makes a good companion crop in a fmix with the small grains and clovers because of its extreme cold-hardiness.Seeding Instructions- Plant August through October for good fall growth. Winter rye is a cereal grain that should not be confused with ryegrass, which is for pasture, hay, lawns, and cover crop. Winter rye is planted in the fall and can germinate and grow very quickly in cool soils. The fast growth of winter rye suppresses even the most noxious of weeds, and will do better than other grains in poor soils. It’s the most cold-hardy of the grains able to withstand temperatures 30 degrees below zero! Its long root structure will hold soils in place and prevent soil compaction and erosion, plus quietly siphon available nitrogen from the ground for recycling. In the spring you can decide how to best utilize this unique crop: use it as a green manure and return the biomass and recycled nitrogen back into the soil for the next crop; use it for animal forage; or just before seed set you could cut and use it for a very clean mulch to be used around other crops such as strawberries. Of course, you could let if fully mature and use the grain for making flour, rye bread, rye beer, or animal fodder. Winter rye is a grain that is quite happy to be grown with a legume like hairy vetch or crimson clover. Rye can be successful planted later then almost any other cover crop due to its low germination and growth temperature requirements. Cereal rye is known for being the best cereal crop at retaining residual N. It’s typical for a fall planted cereal rye crop to scavenge on average 25 to 50 lbs of N, with cases scavenging in excess of 100 lbs of N. The vigorous spring growth has successful weed suppression through competition and allelopathic chemicals. Rye can be terminated in the spring through the alternative methods of rolling, mowing, or crimping after boot stage. Rye will out yield any other cereal crops when planted in droughty, infertile, or sandy soils. The hardiest of fall planted cover crops, is the “last chance” crop for late fall plantings. If planted late, it may not provide much winter cover, but if it has germinated, it will show rapid spring growth, suppressing weeds and providing forage or grain for harvest. If planted early enough, it makes a great winter grazing. Rye is inexpensive and easy to establish. It has a fast growing fibrous root system that can take up and hold residual nutrients.
