1000 Summer Savory Herb Seeds, Chubrica – Non-GMO – Always Fresh Seeds!
1000 Summer Savory Herb Seeds, Chubrica, NON-GMO Heirloom Summer Savory (Satureja hortensis) is an annual herb that is widely used to season different meats, vegetables, beans, cabbage, sauerkraut, etc. It’s also used in combination with other herbs such as Herbes de Provence, a French seasoning. Summer Savory is also known to be used as a home remedy to treat sore throats; in folklore it is known as a sexual aphrodisiac. This herb will germinate well and grow vigorously as it is super easy to grow. Great attractor for bees. Germination is 10-14 days, maturity in 60 days Sowing: Start seed indoors by sowing it in a flat on the surface of the soil; keep at a temperature of 65-70 degrees F until germination, which may take up to 21 days. After the last chance of frost, transplant the seedlings outdoors in well drained or sandy soil and full sun; space them 9-12″ apart. Summer Savory herb seeds also grow well in containers and can easily be propogated from cuttings. As a companion plant, it improves the flavor of beans, sweet potatoes and onions; it also discourages insect pests and attracts honey bees. Growing: Keep the seedlings watered only until they have become established; mature summer savory thrives in fairly dry soil and strong sunlight, and should not be regularly watered unless drought conditions persist. Since the stems often grow thin and weak, they may need support to prevent breaking. Though summer savory readily reseeds itself, this can be prevented by removing the maturing flower heads. ALL SEED LOTS ARE TESTED FOR GERMINATION. Delicious. No garden is complete without Summer Savory. Summer Savory is a wonderful heirloom variety with good old-fashioned taste. A native, annual, herb from the Mediterranean/Central Europe area. Known as the best culinary savory for flavoring recipes, dressings, gravy, and fresh salads due to its mild peppery taste. Excellent in bean dishes! The slender, pointy, slightly hairy leaves are nicely fragrant, fresh or dried, and grow on reddish colored stems with lavender pink flowers. Bushy plants grow up to 2 feet tall and work very well in containers or inside pots. It has multi medicinal uses and is even used as an aphrodisiac. Summer savory is widely renowned as a culinary herb with a smoother flavor then Winter Savory and similar to marjoram, but unique to itself. Originally introduced to England from the Mediterranean, it quickly took its place along with thyme, marjoram and basil. Indeed, it was one of the herbs that Charlemagne specifically ordered planted in his own royal garden. There are two major types of savory in common cultivation, winter and summer savory. Summer savory is lighter in flavor, but still has the characteristic minty-peppery flavor that is peculiar to the species. It has been used medicinally as well as for cooking. The Greeks, for instance, used it to treat earaches and toothaches, and Roman midwives used it as an all purpose disinfectant. According to ancient Greek lore, Pliny the Elder gave it the name satureja, which is a derivative of the word satyr. This was because satyrs were thought to have lived in fields of savory; this also implies that the herb itself was why the satyrs’ were so “passionate”, or so the Greeks thought. Whether or not it’s true, there’s no doubt that summer savory has earned its place in the culinary annals. It is often used to flavor spring vegetables, potatoes and cheeses. It is a primary ingredient in the French herbs Provencal. At least one modern herbal notes that the presence of p-cymene in the volatile oil may make it useful in treatment of diarrhea and sore throats. Seeds can be sown directly into garden when soil is warm or started in containers and transplanted. This can be grown nicely in containers and clay pots. Zones 3-10 All seeds are packaged and for the current growing season. About Us We are a small family run seed processor that has a long tradition of farming for many generations. I fondly remember my Grandfather telling stories about his Grandfather tilling the earth and the events that impacted his success. The stories bring to life the courage and creativity required to survive capricious weather and market prices. Our history makes it clear that the rewards of farming, including the birthing of the calves, the bounty of a good harvest, and the family’s feeling of being rooted in the soil. I still remember with pride, getting to sit on my Grandfathers lap while driving the tractor for the first time during corn harvest. In addition to commercial crops, most family farms also have large gardens to grow much of the food consumed on a farm. Growing your own vegetables, flowers, spices and herbs, canning and freezing were a normal part of life on the farm. We always saved seed from each plant for starting the cycle for the next year. 500 Summer Savory Herb Seeds, Satureja hortensis, Culinary, Non-GMO, Genuine USA
Test Summer Savory (Satureja hortensis) Check out our other listings! Summer Savory is an annual herb with a peppery scent and taste. An essential component in Herbs de Provence, it is also a great choice to use alone to season beans, meat, stuffing, and stew. A single savory plant can season an entire summer’s worth of dishes as new leaves will begin to grow nearly as quickly as you can harvest them! Sow seeds indoors on the surface of the soil, 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost. Seeds should germinate in 7-14 days, but can take as long as 21 days for seedlings to emerge. Transplant outdoors once the plants have their second set of true leaves and the danger of frost has passed. Set plants about 2 feet apart in moist, nutrient rich soil. Does best in full sun. Grows to 1 to 2 feet in height and 3 to 6 feet in width. Harvest stems when needed for seasoning to promote new growth and prevent flowering, which slightly diminishes savory’s flavor. Makes a great companion plant to tomatoes since both enjoy the same soil and growing conditions! 70 days to maturity Contact Us Don’t hesitate to contact us via eBay messages if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions.
