We ship in 1 business day. Shipped with USPS First Class Mail. Plant Name: Tomato, Henderson’s Pink Ponderosa Latin Name: Solanum lycopersicum Days to Germinate: 7-14 Days to Harvest: 83 Germination Rate: 97% Test Date: 11/23 Growth Habit: Indeterminate USDA Zones: 3-12 Lifespan: Annual Brand: TomorrowSeeds Sunlight: Full Sun, Partial Shade GMO: No Pollination: Heirloom, Open-Pollinated Fungicide-Treated Seeds*: No Seeds Packed For**: 2024 *Fungicide-treated seeds protect the seedlings from diseases until they are up and growing. Do not eat treated seeds. **Seeds are freshly packed for the growing season of the year listed. Seeds are still viable beyond pack date. Store in a cool and dry location such as the refrigerator or basement to best preserve germination rates. Planting Instructions: Soil Preparation: Choose an area with heavy, well-draining soil that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. Several weeks before planting, prepare dig or plow the soil 8-10 inches deep and rake up several times to break up large clods. Work the soil when it is dry enough to not stick to garden tools. You may optionally spread 2-3 inches of organic material, such as manure, compost, peat moss, or rotted hay and mix into the top 4-6 inches of soil. Planting: Try not to plant seeds until the soil warms in the spring and all danger of frost is past since tomatoes grow best in warm weather. For Fall tomatoes, transplant tomatoes about 100 days before the first expected frost. Starting tomatoes indoors and then transplanting outdoors will be easier than if starting from seed outdoors. If direct sowing, plant 3-4 seeds in 1/2 inch deep holes on raised beds about 6 inches tall. Space holes 2-4 feet apart within rows spaced 4-5 feet apart (from hole to hole). For staked or caged plants, space the rows at least 3 feet apart. For unsupported plants, leave 4 to 5 feet between the rows. If transplanting, plant 3-4 seeds 1/2 inch deep in a pot. When tomato plants are 6-8 inches tall, transplant outdoors. It is best to transplant tomato plants in the evening or a cloudy day to prevent plants from drying too much and wilting. Make 3-4 inch-deep transplant holes spaced 2-4 feet apart within raised rows spaced 4-5 feet apart (from plant to plant). Fill the holes with water and let it soak in. Move the plants carefully from the pots or flats and set them in the transplant holes. Set the transplants slightly deeper that it had been growing, burying some of the stem in the ground. Pack the soil loosely around the plant. Leave a slightly sunken area around each plant to hold water. Water the plants after planting. Planting Depth: 1/2 inch Within-Row Spacing: 2-4 feet Between-Row Spacing: 4-5 feet Care During the Season: Watering: Water the plants enough to keep from wilting. Slow, deep watering helps the root system grow strong. Try not to let tomato plants wilt severely or this may reduce yield and quality of the fruit. Weeding, Staking, and Pruning: Keep plants as weed-free as possible. When tilling or hoeing, be careful not to cut too deeply into the soil near the tomato plants as cutting the feeder rooters may slow the plant’s growth. Pull by hand any weeds that are close to the plants. Mulching can help increase yields. Spread a 2-3 inch layer of organic material, such as compost, leaves, or hay around the growing plants. Mulching will help stop weed growth and water loss from the soil. Stake or cage tomatoes to support them or let tomatoes grow on the ground. A 6-foot long stake set 10 inches deep in the soil will work well. If staking, put the stake in shortly after transplanting to lessen root damage. As the plant grows taller, tie it the plant loosely to the stake every 12 inches with pieces of rag or twine. Prune staked tomato plants to produce a more orderly vine. Remove the small shoots that grow out of points where each leaf join the main stem. If caging, you can make a good cage by using a piece of concrete reinforcement wire 5 feet tall and 6 feet wide. Put the cages over the young plants and push the cages down in the soil to keep them from blowing over. Both tying and pruning is usually not needed in this method. Fertilizing: You may optionally add 2-3 pounds of a complete fertilizer per 100 square feet of garden area. Spread the fertilizer evenly over the garden and work into the top 3-4 inches of soil. If planting single tomato plants, when tomato fruits grow to 1 inch in diameter, you may optionally place about 1 level tablespoon of fertilizer around each plant about 6 inches from the stem, then mix fertilizer well with the soil. Fertilize the plants every 3-4 weeks with 1-2 level tablespoons of fertilizer. Water the plant after adding fertilizer. This may help increase the yield and quality of the tomatoes. Insecticides: Insecticides may be used to protect plants. Bt-based insecticides and sulfur are organic options that can be used for prevention. Sulfur also has fungicidal properties and helps in controlling many diseases. Sevin is a synthetic insecticide that can be used to control for the flea beatle. Insecticidal soaps and neem oils are good ways to control for psyllids and whiteflies. Before using a pesticide, please read the label and always follow cautions, warnings and directions. Diseases: Watch tomato plants closely, especially in mild weather. Leaf spots are caused by fungi and bacteria and can be treated with neem oil, sulfur, and other fungicides. Please always follow label directions. Harvesting: For best quality, pick tomatoes at full color. The first tomatoes are usually ready 8-10 weeks after transplanting. If you pick them when they are green or transitioning colors, let them ripen at room temperature. They may be stored in the refrigerator after they reach full color. If you pick them when they are transitioning colors, let them ripen at room temperature. They may be stored in the refrigerator after they reach full color. Do not eat treated seeds. **Seeds are freshly packed for the growing season of the year listed. Seeds are still viable beyond pack date. Store in a cool and dry location such as the refrigerator or basement to best preserve germination rates. Planting Instructions: Soil Preparation: Prepare soil by removing large weeds, large rocks, and litter from the planting area. Dig or plow the soil 8-10 inches deep in winter or early spring. You may optionally apply manure or compost to build the organic matter content of the soil. Turn the soil over to cover organic material completely. Next, work the soil into ridges or hills 4-8 inches high and 12-14 inches wide. This creates well-draining soil beds. Heavier soils may require higher soil beds. Since melons are vining crops, they require a lot of space and are best for larger gardens or lot-sized urban gardens; they may grow in small gardens if vines are trellised and the fruit is supported. Melons grow best in deep, well-draining sandy or sandy loam soil with plenty of organic matter and a neutral pH. Heavy soils with lots of clay may cause smaller sized plants and produce fewer melons. Planting: Try not to plant seeds until the soil warms in the spring and all danger of frost is past since melons are warm-season crops and can be easily injured by frost. Black plastic mulch can help to increase soil temperature and give melons an earlier start on growth. To direct sow, plant 6-8 seeds 1/2 inch deep in hills spaced 2-3 feet apart within rows. Water after planting if soil is dry. Transplanting, in contrast to direct sowing, may save 10-12 days of harvest time. To transplant, plant seeds in peat pots 2-4 weeks before transplanting. Transplant into the garden before the second true leaf opens (“true leaves” are the first two large leaves that appear before the smaller “seed leaves” appear). After melon plants break through the soil, thin to 2 plants per hill. Planting Depth: 1/2 inch Within-Row Spacing: 2-3 feet Between-Row Spacing: 6-8 feet Care During the Season: Watering: Water the at least 1 inch per week. High temperatures, high winds, and sandy soils will increase the need for water. Weeding and Pruning: Keep plants as weed-free as possible. When plowing or hoeing, be careful not to cut too deeply into the soil near the melon plants as cutting the feeder rooters which may slow the plant’s growth. Pruning can increase fruit size of muskmelons and honeydews, but it is usually not needed. Fertilizing: Melons benefit from small amounts of fertilizer in 2 or 3 applications. Dig a 4-6 inch deep trench, about 2 inches from the side of the row, all down the row. You may optionally scatter 2-3 pounds of fertilizer for every 60-70 feet of row in the trench. Insecticides: Insecticides may be used to protect plants. Bt-based insecticides and sulfur are organic options that can be used for prevention. Sulfur also has fungicidal properties and helps in controlling many diseases. Bt neem oil can be used to control the spider mites, and pyrethins can control for the cucumber beetle. Neem oil and insecticidal soaps are good ways to control for aphids. Before using a pesticide, read the label and always follow cautions, warnings and directions. Diseases: Rotating crops is important for disease control. If spots appear on the leaves and no insects are present, a fungicide may be needed. Neem oil, sulfur, and other fungicides may be used. Please always follow label directions. Harvesting: Harvest Korean melon when the fruit rind changes from green to pale yellow to a bright yellow color and there is a sweet odor, about 40 days after fruit set. Harvest Korean melons using pruners and cut the fruit from the vines, do not pull. If fruit falls off the vine when shaken, it may be too ripe. Belgian Endive Seeds, Witloof Chicory | Witlof Chicon Perennial Garden Seed 2024

Belgian Endive is a luxurious, torpedo-shaped vegetable with pale yellow and white tightly packed, elongated leaves. This gourmet vegetable is prized in Europe for its elegant presentation, crisp texture, and pleasantly bitter flavor. Its slightly tangy undertones make it a versatile ingredient in both raw and cooked preparations that pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Use in salads for a refreshing crunch and hint of bitterness to your greens, as a attractive vehicle for dips, spreads, or fillings, as edible serving cups or boats for appetizers and hors d’oeuvres, cooked in soups and stews. Belgian endive is also delicious braised, roasted, and grilled to bring out its natural sweetness. In history, Belgian Endive roots were commonly used as a coffee substitute. In fact, Belgian Endives were discovered when a farmer storing roots for coffee saw the pale yellow heads regrowing from the roots. Belgian Endive is a nutritious vegetable that provides vitamins (especially vitamin K and vitamin A), dietary fiber, and essential minerals. Its natural bitterness can add a unique flavor dimension to your meals. Also Known As: Belgian Endive, French Endive, Chicon, Witloof, Witlof, Witlooflof, Brussels Witloof, Endive Barbaresque, Chicorée de Bruxelles, Witloofchicorée, Belgische Endivie, Indivia, Blanched Endive, Pale Endive, White Leaf Endive. Do not eat treated seeds. **Seeds are freshly packed for the growing season of the year listed. Seeds are still viable beyond pack date. Store in a cool and dry location such as the refrigerator or basement to best preserve germination rates. Planting Instructions: Soil Preparation: Remove weeds, large rocks, and litter from the planting area. Till the soil 14-18 inches deep and rake several times to break up large clods. It is best to do this when the soil is dry enough to not stick to garden tools. Loosening the soil will help the plant establish strong roots. Avoid adding nitrogen to the soil to prevent excessive top growth. Planting: Belgian Endive is short-term perennial with a two-stage growing process. First the root is grown, then after a period of cold temperatures called vernalization, the root is replanted in total darkness in a process called forcing. Stage 1: Plant in mid-Summer (ideally, first week of July) for mature parsnip-like taproots in late-Fall. Use a hoe handle or stick to make a 1/2 inch furrow deep down the center of the ridge. Plant 1 seed in the furrows spaced 4 inches apart within the rows. Cover with loose soil then firm soil and sprinkle with water. Keep soil moist until established. Lift the roots from the soil in mid-October-mid-November. The roots are ideally 1-1/4″ to 2-1/4″ in diameter to produce attractive endive buds. Cut off leaves 1″ above the root grown and trim roots to 8″. If the roots did not experience cold temperatures in the ground yet, they may need to undergo vernalization by storing in a humid, 32F-40F environment for 3 weeks. A cool garage or refrigerator are good options. Stage 2: After the roots have been vernalized, force the roots by using a >10″ deep crate, bin, or pot and covering >2/3 of the roots in a soilless medium such as sand or peat. The roots can be densely spaced, about 2″-3″ apart. Add water so the medium is completely moistened. Then cover the system in a thick black trash bag and store in a 65F environment. A basement near the furnace or closet are good options. Belgian Endives are ready to harvest in 3-4 weeks. Planting Depth: 1/2 inch Within-Row Spacing: 4 inches Between-Row Spacing: 2-3 feet Care During the Season: Watering: Water plants moderately. If the soil moisture is low, water but avoid waterlogging soil. Weeding: Keep plants free of weeds, which rob weak root systems of nutrients and moisture. Insecticides: Insecticides may be used to protect plants. Bt-based insecticides and sulfur are organic options that can be used for prevention. Sevin is a synthetic option. Sulfur also has fungicidal properties and helps in controlling many diseases. Before using a pesticide, please read the label and always follow cautions, warnings and directions. Diseases: Disease can happen in cloudy, damp weather. Check plants daily and treat with an approved fungicide if diseases do appear. Neem oil, sulfur, and other fungicides are available for use. Please always follow label directions. Harvesting: Belgian Endive is typically harvested in late Fall. The long taproots can make them difficult to remove from the soil. Cut individual outside leaves or harvest the whole bud by cutting at the root crown.
