Nymphaea Slocum’s Almost Black Water Lily (WinterHardy) | Sprouted Tuber/Rhizome
⬇PLEASE READ BEFORE PURCHASING⬇ (PLANT INFO)————————————————————-Scientific name: Nymphaea “Almost Black“Hybridizer: SlocumAvailable As: Sprouted Tuber/RhizomeHardiness/Type: Very Winter HardyBloom Season: Spring to fallFlower Size: 14 cmFlower Production: ModerateFlower Color: Dark Red (Almost Black Center)Pad Color: Dark GreenSize: Medium-large (5“- 8“ across / 4′- 8′ spread)Water Depth: 6“ to 2′ (best in 1.5)’Fertilizer: 2 to 3 tablets Monthly (April to September)Hardiness Zone: USDA Zone 4-11Light Conditions: Full Sun (PLANT INFO)————————————————————- The Nymphaea “Almost Black“ has a very dark almost black center and outer petals are a deep saturated red & this beautiful plant was bred by the famous waterlily hybridizer Perry Slocum in 1993. It is the second darkest red lily (behind Slocum’s “Black Princess”), with a nice mottled pattern on the pads all summer & usually late into the fall. We’ve had lilies such as this beauty for over 20+ years & will for many more to come. They are very easy growers for me & to plant them, use your pot & fill with a heavier clay type dirt (the heavier the better; you don’t want floating). Plant the tuber in said dirt & cover with an inch layer of sand (this will hold the dirt down). Then allow the top growth of the tuber to come up above the sand a little. If you have koi or goldfish in a pond, maybe zip tie the tuber to a rock inside the pot so they can’t dig it up. Slowly submerge in the pond or larger container and sink it at least a foot and up to 3 foot below the surface of the water if you have a deeper pond. During the growing months, fertilize each month with a few aquatic fertilizer tabs pushed down in the soil. The lily will grow fast & will become root bound in the pot in 1 to 2 years (You will repot when this happens; best done when pads are growing in early spring). Repot with 1 to 2 tubers; this will give plenty of room for new growth. If you have any issues or have a question, send me a message.
