Walter's aster is native to coastal North Carolina south to Florida in sandhills and pine flatwoods. This species likes well-drained sandy soils, though it is adaptable. Within its local range, it is usually is found together with Symphyotrichum racemosum, S. pilosum, and Symphyotrichum lateriflorum, which have wider ranges.
