General information about the Malabar Spinach: Malabar Spinach also known as Indian spinach, Ceylon spinach, basella, vine spinach and Basella alba, is an edible vine in the family Basellaceae.Malabar Spinach is a heat-loving plant, thrives in summer, easy to grow, disease and insects rarely happen; extremely frost-sensitive, It creeps when temperatures are cool, but leaps when the mercury hits 90 F.Its thick, semi-succulent, heart-shaped leaves have a mild flavor and mucilaginous texture. Malabar Spinach are used in thicken soups, stir-fries with garlic and chili peppers, or like spinach in salads. As vegetables, Malabar spinach is high in vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, and calcium. It is low in calories by volume, but high in protein per calorie. The succulent mucilage is a particularly rich source of soluble fiber. Growing Information· Sunlight: full sun Part shade increases leaf size, but prefers hot weather and full sun.· Soil conditions: tolerates damp soil Grows well in a wide range of soils, but prefers moist, fertile soils, high in organic matter, pH 6.5 to 6.8.· Lifecycle: annualGrown as an annual, but is perennial in frost-free areas · How to plant: Germination temperature: 65 F to 75 F Days to emergence: 14 to 21 Scarify seed to hasten germination Normally, seed can be saved 4 years• In Zone 7 and warmer, direct seed 2 to 3 weeks after last frost date.
