Asclepias viridiflora is a herbaceous perennial in the Apocynaceae family. Its native range is from Canada to the western central and eastern United States and northeast Mexico. Familiar names include green comet milkweed, Wand Milkweed, green-flower milkweed, and green milkweed. In Latin, the word viridiflora means green-flowered. It can be found growing in prairies, shaded roadsides, and fields and is listed as an endangered species in New York, Florida, and Connecticut. It can grow to 2 feet tall from a vertical rootstock. The leaves are lanceolate and opposite, around 4 inches long. Leaves have been found rounder in the moist site and narrow in dry sites. The flowers cluster are in the upper leaf axils. They are in bloom from July until September. They are pale green with 20-80 per cluster. The seed pods are long and pointed without warts, as most milkweed seed pods have. It prefers to grow in full sun with minimal water needs. It will be visited by local bees. Zones 4-10 Germination Place your seeds and some soil in a ziplock bag. Moisten the mixture enough so it sticks together without water dripping out. Write the name of the seeds on the bag. Place the mixture in your refrigerator for 60 days. Seeds can then be sown into a well-drained, sandy compost and covered lightly with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in filtered bright light and keep it moist until germination.
