Its native range is Ethiopia and South Sudan. It is well adapted for high winds and high altitudes and will grow in tropical areas. Today it is cultivated in many other parts of the world. In the wild, it is a tall tree, growing 26 ft tall, but it is pruned to help with the harvesting process in cultivation. It has shiny green leaves that are fragrant. The white flowers are followed by yellow to purple fruits. Villa Sarchi is a compact variety well adapted to higher elevations and produces a good quality coffee bean with moderate yields. It prefers to grow in light shade with high water needs for the first three years. After three years, it will fruit. Zones 8-11 Germination Soak seeds for 24 hours. Sow seeds 1/2" deep and lightly cover with a sandy medium. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain a temperature around 65-75F. Germination is 60-180 days.
