Dawn Redwood Tree Seeds (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) Fast Growing Fall ColorAll of the dawn redwood trees growing in this country are descended from the special seeds, which were discovered and collected during war and planted in peace. Today, the dawn redwood tree is still considered a rare garden treasure. They are easy to grow and tolerate most soil conditions. Dawn redwood is one of the most beautiful trees in North American gardens and makes a good addition to your yard if you have the right spot. That spot needs to be able to accommodate a large tree—dawn redwood is fast-growing and can reach 70 feet tall, or more. Dawn Redwood is a deciduous conifer producing small, round 1/2" to 1" cones. It has a neat pyramidal shape in youth, maturing into a more rounded crown. The bright green, feathery leaves turn orange-brown or reddish-brown in the fall. Fast-growing and easily transplanted. Grows to 70'–100', with a 25' spread. (Zones 5-8) Note: Dawn Redwood grows late in the season and may be damaged by early fall freezes. Plant early enough in the fall to allow the roots to become established and avoid planting in a low-lying area (frost pocket). Dawn Redwoods also make some of the Best Bonsai specimens as well.Dawn Redwood Germination:1) As with all Redwoods, germination of seeds is slow and uncertain no matter which method is used.2) Soak the seed in filtered water for 24 hours.3) Place the seeds on a layer of paper towel, vermiculite, perlite. or peat-based seed compost in a resealable plastic bag, then cover with a layer of perlite, vermiculite or compost.Seal the bag and place in a refrigerator for two to three weeks. Monitor the seeds to be sure the substrate stays damp but not wet.4) Remove the bag from the refrigerator to a room-temperature area. At this point, the seeds can stay in the bag to germinate or may be moved to a pot or (weather permitting) outdoors. Seed germination will take one to two months. Although the trees prefer full sun for at least six hours per day, the seedlings need a gradual introduction.
