Etlingera elatior is a herbaceous perennial in the Zingiberaceae family. Its native range is from the Peninsula of Thailand to western Malesia. Some familiar names are torch ginger, ginger flower, red ginger lily, torch lily, wild ginger, combrang, bunga kantan, Philippine wax flower, ගොඩ ඕලු (goda olu), ගොඩ නෙලුම් (goda nelum), සිද්ධාර්ථ (siddartha), 火炬姜 (pinyin: Huǒjù jiāng), Indonesian tall ginger, boca de dragón, rose de porcelain, and porcelain rose. This plant requires constantly moist soil and to be protected from the wind. It will not tolerate any frost or even nights that get below 50F. It can grow to around 15 feet tall in warm climates. The leaves have a central groove that reaches 3 feet long. The flowers form on top of stalks 3 feet tall. The flowers are tiny yellow ones inside the rose bracts. They can bloom all year long. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade. They will also like some humus-rich, well-drained soil. Zones 10-11 Germination Soak seeds overnight. Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover with soil. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
