Hibiscus laevis is a perennial in the Malvaceae family. A few familiar names are halberd-leaf rosemallow and soldier rose mallow. A native to SE. Canada to Central & E. U.S.A. It can grow to 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide. The showy flowers come out for one day only. They can be white to pink in color, with the inside being maroon or pinkish-purple. The stems are unbranched and hairless. It grows from a taproot. The leaves are also hairless, around 5-6 inches long, and lobed. The three lobes of the leaves resemble a medieval halbred where it gets its name. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade. A hardy hibiscus that can grow in most regions that will bloom in the Summer. Zones 2-11 Germination Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover with soil. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-30 days.
