Common NameBlazing Star

Liatris Spicata-Marsh blazing star. Aka: blazing star. Tall unbranched slender clumping perennial with thin grass-like leaves that reach to the top of the stem to the showy flowers stacked around the long stalkless flowerhead. The plant produces a multitude of densely packed spikes of rose-purple flowers from July to September. Because of the absent stalk the flowers become fluffy-like and flow with the air. They are easy to care for with little to no problems (but don’t like wet cold soil). Herbivore mammals think this plant is yummy, so some sort of barrier would be necessary for protection. This plant is native to Eastern U.S. and is an herbaceous perennial flowering plant in the sunflower and daisy family Asteraceae. Liatris spicata was historically used medicinally by Native Americans for its carminative, diuretic, stimulant, sudorific, and expectorant properties. In addition to these uses, the Cherokee used the plant as an analgesic for pain in the back and limbs and the Menominee used it for a "weak heart." The root of the plant is the part most often used. Native Americans also used the plant to treat swelling, abdominal pain and spasms/colic, and snake bites. Currently, the plant is used for a sore throat by gargling an infusion, as an herbal insect repellent, and in potpourri. 25+ seed per pack Planting Zone: 3 – 10 Full Sun / Partial Shade Height: 3 feet - 6 feet Width: 1 foot - 2 feet Attracts Hummingbirds , Butterflies, Bumble bees, various birds and other beneficial insects Great cut or dried flowers Medicinal Drought tolerant Heat and humidity tolerant I urge anyone buying seed to do their homework on germination, I have not raised and cannot raise many of these plants as I am sub-tropics here in St Augustine,Florida. All seed are NOT alike! There are so many different factors in germination and not doing a search is throwing your money away. I want everyone to be successful when growing your flowers from seed it is the most rewarding experience in Gardening and you can do it, if you give the seed what it needs to grow. I always check 3 sites of info to choose how I will go about it. It is not hard to do, if you do it right! SEED GERMINATION TIP!!!!!!! ONLY GERMINATE A SMALL PORTION AT A TIME. DON'T PUT ALL YOUR MONKEYS IN A BARREL. Good Luck and Happy Planting!!!!
