It is native to Mexico and Central America but has a nearly pantropical distribution as an introduced species Butterflies, beneficial insects, hummingbirds and birds flock to sunflower heads for food, pollen and nectar. Mexican sunflowers are particularly good at attracting Monarch butterflies as they migrate through the country. Butterflies and insects enjoy the flower pollen and nectar while birds feast on the seeds. Many people see sunflowers as a spiritual flower. This is because of their similar appearance to the sun and the fact that they're always trying to find the light. So sunflowers are very popular with various religions as they symbolise loyalty and following god or their spiritual guide.
