Beaucarnea recurvata is best known by the common name Ponytail Palm. It is an unusual and versatile plant that is comfortable outdoors or indoors. These unique plants are not true palms but are actually more closely related to agave and asparagus. Form unites this family as they all produce leaves in a tight rosette pattern. Ponytail Palms have earned their apt name with their strange growth habit. They have a large, bulbous caudex trunk near the ground, which gradually thins to a narrow trunk until it ends in a dense spray of curly, ribbon-like leaves. Large, well-established, and mature plants will produce flowers randomly. The flowers are very attractive to various pollinators. Ponytail Palms are native to southeastern Mexico and will thrive in conditions similar to those of its homeland. This makes it the perfect low-maintenance choice for the Southern gardener who needs a plant with minimal watering or other care requirements. Ponytail Palm often reaches 30 ft. tall in its native environment but rarely grows beyond ten ft. in cultivation. They grow and mature slowly, so can be grown as potted plants for the porch or patio, and adapt easily to indoor growing conditions requiring only high direct light and minimal watering.
