Scrophularia macrantha is an herbaceous perennial plant in the Scrophulariaceae family. Its native range is from New Mexico to Arizona. Familiar names include Mimbres figwort, New Mexico Figwort, and Redbirds in a Tree. Hummingbirds are attracted to the red tubular flowers at the ends of each stem. It is in bloom from spring through fall without deadheading. A great xeriscaping plant once established, requiring little water. It can grow to around 2-3 feet tall and 1-2 feet wide. The leaves are toothed, and the dark green color is a perfect background for the vibrant red bird-like flowers. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs at first and then little is needed. Zones 4-9 Germination Sow seeds on the soil, lightly tamp down and do not cover seeds with soil. Keep moist with a spray bottle and place under a bright light. Do not cover with plastic. Maintain temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
