Thunbergia alata is an Annual, Tropical, or Tender Perennial, Vine, or Climber in the Acanthaceae family. A native to Eastern Africa. It is commonly called the black-eyed Susan vine. It is found growing in Brazil, Hawaii, Australia, and the southern USA. It grows well in hanging baskets and containers with something to grow up. A well-known flower around the world and a favorite for many to grow. Its growth habit is a twining vine extending to 15 feet. It has arrow-shaped leaves that are soft to the touch. The flowers are a deep yellow-orange and sometimes light yellow with a chocolate-purple eye. A fast grower that will bloom quickly if trimmed to encourage blooms. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Zones 9-11 Germination Soak seeds overnight. Sow seeds 1/4" deep and lightly cover with soil. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 70F. Germination can be slow.
