An ancient tree that knew the dinosaurs, but is well-suited to modern landscape plantings. Likes full sun, is easily transplanted. Deciduous. Prefers moist, deep, well-drained soils. Fast growing. Grows to 70' to 100', 25' spread. (zones 5-8) This tree was once one of the most widespread tree species in the Northern hemisphere (during the Tertiary period). Fossils have been found across the northern hemisphere, including Greenland and Spitzbergen, dating from when the continents were further south, and close together sharing a common flora. Medicinal use of Dawn Redwood: None known Other uses : Plants can be grown as a tall hedge. Plants have an extensive root system and so they are used to stabilize river banks and paddy field walls.
