DESCRIPTION: Old City is arguably our best digweedi. It has the darkest red stripe of any of our digweedii. Flowers are very fragrant, exceptionally large (up to 8 1/2" in diameter) and grow on strong, tall scapes. We have recorded as many as 11 flowers (more than any other digweedii we grow) on scapes as tall as 42". This is a very striking and imposing plant that makes a nice focal point in the garden. And, in addition, it forms lots of offsets, so in just a few years you can have a nice grouping of these plants. Of the two dozen, or so, forms of digweedii we grow, this is probably our most overall rewarding form. It blooms from June through November here in northeast Florida, zone 9. In our opinion, the digweedii type blooms are among the most INCREDIBLE blooms in the world of crinum. Old City is very rare and has never been widely distributed. We consider it a "must have" plant for any crinum lover. It makes an excellent selection for a container and would be perfect for almost any garden setting. We have a large one in a front bed near the street where neighbors can enjoy the blooms and have dozens of others along our driveway in plain view. We grow about 2 dozen forms of digweedii. Digweedii also can go by the common name Nassau Lily and it is a term that refers to any hybrid form of Milk and Wine crinum that have a star, not a trumpet shape, with wide, overlapping tepals/sepals. Our largest bulb is small for a digweedii usually only about 2" in diameter. It offsets fast and mature bulbs can produce 6 offsets in a year. They are VERY fragrant, smelling like lilac. They will form beautiful clumps if left undisturbed for many years. These plants have more erect leaves and a small clump of bulbs requires several square feet of space. We are offering this for the first time on EBay in December 2013. We grow over 1000 different crinum including about 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: We traded for one small bulb in 2003 with a collector friend. In 10 years that one bulb has produced well over 100 bulbs. The background of this bulb is unknown, and it is possible that it is not just a simple cross of americanum and scabrum, commonly called a digweedii cross. The digweedii type cross was officially named when first crossed in 1820, a cross of C. americanum and C. scabrum. In collections, digweedii appear under pseudonyms such as Erubescens, Fimbriaulum, Submersum or ‘Royal White.’ It is none of these. The digweedii/Nassau Lily dates back in the South over 125 years where sisters in San Patricio, TX convent cultivated them as early as 1876. GROWING CONDITIONS: This is a semi-hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It is a bit more tender than many crinum and should do fine outside to at least zone 7+ or 8. It tolerates a wide range of soils. Digweedii typically bloom in the second half of the summer opening in the early evening and you can smell them just walking nearby. They should do best planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, but they will also make excellent container plants. They can survive nicely out of the ground for very extended periods if allowed to dry. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on ONE medium-size, 2+ year old bulb about 1" in diameter which should bloom in about 2 years. Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive.
