These tomatoes were developed by selection at Oregon State University, are non-gmo, and open pollinated. It seems that this story is fiction though, the incident was supposed to have taken place in 1820, and the story doesn't appear in print until 117 years later in Joseph Sickler's book,The History of Salem County.
