It grows up to 14 feet, some report up to 30 feet if grown as a perennial. You can cut back it for the plant size you want. There are two main varieties: red-stemmed and green-stemmed. The seeds you will receive is green-stemmed which makes larger leaves and vines than red stem, and is excellent for salads as it low in calories and rich in protein. Common Name: Malabar spinach Scientific Name: Basella alba (green stemmed version ) , Basella rubra ( red stemmed version ) Famiy: Basellaceae Light: Full sun. Prepare the site: Malabar spinach prefers a sunny site with fertile well-drained soil, so we should add a generous amount of organic soil conditioner and some slow-release fertilizer into the soil, mix them with a garden fork. Seed Sowing: Add fertilizer to the site where you want to grow the seeds. Dig to mix the fertilizer with soil and make the soil porous. Sow seeds 1/4" deep and approximately 18" apart. Cover with soil and water well, keep the soil moist for the seeds germinate. I recommend soaking the seed in water overnight to improve germination rate. Seeds require a period of cold stratification to break their dormancy and jump-start the germination process. Normally, the seeds receive this stratification as they are left to overwinter out of doors. Because your forced-germination process is on a schedule that differs from the natural cycle, you must re-create the cold period. Store the seeds in a fridge. Never store them in a freezer as the sudden temperature drop is likely to kill them. Harvest: You can harvest the leaves in the beginning. As soon as the plants become big enough, you can pick young leaves and tips, that will promote more side branches and new tips for subsequent harvests. Malabar Spinach is a pick and come again plant. Harvest it again and again over all season whenever you want. Adding Malabar Spinach To Your Diet: Malabar Spinach can be eaten raw or cooked. use it raw in salads and sandwiches.
