I'm selling over 600 + kinds of seeds ( and also live plants during the warmer months ) so check my other auctions . You are bidding on 30 about OBEDIENT PLANT SEEDS ( Physostegia virginiana ) . ( I'm also selling these as live plants during the spring and summer , see my other items for sale ) This plant gets its name from a unique characteristic. Each spike contains flowers arranged in four evenly spaced rows along the stem. When one of the flowers is moved or twisted, it stays in the new position--obediently. Its flowers may be well-behaved, but the plant itself occasionally needs to be reined in. Obedient plant is a stiffly erect perennial that grows from creeping rhizomes. After an obedient plant has been in the garden for a few years, its underground rhizomes, or rootstock, soon invade and crowd nearby plants. You don't have to dig out the entire patch of the obedient plant, though. You can simply reduce its size by removing outer sections. The pale lavender-pink flowers are borne in showy spikes atop 2 - 4 ft stalks in late summer and fall. The tubular 1 in blossoms are arranged in vertical columns along the flower spike and the lower ones open first. Culture Lightly acid sandy loam is probably the best soil type for Physostegia virginiana, but it will grow on a variety of moist soils. Anywhere in the pH 5-7 range is fine. Fertilize often during the growing season and mulch well in the fall in cold climates. Divide every 2-3 years in the spring. Light: Obedient plant is happy in either sunny or lightly shaded spots, but it does best with some shade on drier sites, and full sun where it is wetter. Moisture: Physostegia likes moist soil. Low spots and wetland edges that flood occasionally are fine. It will even be happy in soil that is saturated much of the time, but it will be less invasive and have sturdier stems under drier conditions. Hardiness: USDA Zones 3 - 9. To divide and replant an obedient plant: Trim off dead shoots. Using a sharp spade, cut down into the center of the clump and around the sides to create a smaller clump about the width of your spade. Dig under the plant from the outside and lift out the small section that you've just cut. To further divide the new section, just break the individual plants apart. Plant the new divisions into pots right away; if you leave them in the sun too long, the roots could dry out. Plant the divisions at the same depth they were growing in the garden. Use fresh, loose potting soil and press the soil lightly around the plants. Water them, and they're ready to give away or to replant somewhere else in your garden.
