The plants, which grow to between 30 and 40 inches in height, have delicate, fern-like foliage and bright, red-to-orange blossoms that bloom from early summer to late fall. The roots of the marigold release a natural compound called alpha-terthienyl, which inhibits the hatching of nematode eggs. In areas with a shorter growing season, marigolds should be grown during the previous season.
