Butterfly weed prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and once established is very drought-tolerant. It's easy to start from seed, and doesn't usually require cold stratification. The striking orange flowers are very attractive to pollinators. This native milkweed is a host plant for for the Monarch and Queen butterflies. The adult female lays eggs on it and the caterpillars eat the leaves, stems, and flowers. Even a few milkweed plants can help support the Monarch breeding cycle. There are approx. 4,000-4,500 seeds per ounce.
