Cleome serrulata is an annual in the Cleomaceae family. Its native range is from Western and Central Canada to the Western and Central United States. Some familiar names include Rocky Mountain bee plant or beeweed, stinking-clover, bee spider-flower, Navajo spinach, and Guaco. It has been used in traditional medicine treatments as well as food and dyes for paint. It grows naturally on roadsides, prairies, foothills, and open woods. It can grow to about five feet tall, and the leaves are arranged in a spiral fashion. They are compound leaves around 1-3 inches long. The flowers come out in late spring and last until early fall. They are pink to reddish-purple and sometimes white. The flowers remain on the plant even when the plant has fruits hanging from it. This one prefers full sun and is drought-tolerant. Birds, butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds are attracted to it. AnnualGerminationMix seeds and moistened soil together in a ziplock bag. Write the name on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 30 days. Sow seeds into a well-drained, sandy compost and 1/4" deep with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in bright light and keep it moist. Seeds germinate within 30-35 days.
