Aeoniumarboreum 'Zwartkop', Large Purple Aeonium, Black Rose Aeoniumarboreum var atropurpureum 'Schwarzkopf' Common names include: Black rose, Large purple aeonium Origin: Canary Islands and now cultivated worldwide. Description: a very dramatic ornamental, succulent which can have a Height of 3-5 feet and a Width of 1-4 feet depending on growing conditions. The long bare arching stalk-like stems hold very large terminal rosettes of very dark, deep purple-black, rubbery leaves. Flowers: immature and older plants, bright yellow star-shaped flowers form long conical clusters from the centers of the rosettes. This is a stunning contrast against the dark purple-black foliage. After flowering, the stem usually withers and dies unless you prune off the dead flowers and then the stem will continue to live and sprout new growth/leaves. Growth requirements: likes full sun to partial shade, drought tolerant once established, water thoroughly but infrequently and allow plant to dry in between watering's. Can tolerate temperatures from 28°F to100°F. Soil: well-drained.
