Native perennial Forsythia 15 unrooted cuttings, edible, and medicinal plant. You are looking at a listing for 15 unrooted forsythia cuttings! We have a thriving garden with bushes over 20+ years 100% organic never used pesticides!! propagating forsythia, all cuttings will be taken day of order, take a 4- to 10-inch long stem from a mature forsythia plant that has flowered for at least a season. Cuttings should be taken after flowering is completing and when the shrub has leaves. Remove the bottom leaves, leaving at least two inches of stem exposed at the bottom. Plant each cutting into a container that's been filled with a moistened mixture of peat moss, perlite, and sand. Bury the stem cut-side down, with at least one node falling beneath the soil line. Mist the cuttings daily until the roots are about 1 inch in length, which will take at least a month. Once roots have been established, transplant the cuttings into a larger pot placed in a controlled outdoor environment for one or two seasons before planting it in a garden location. The blossoms are edible raw, though they can be slightly bitter. They add color to salads and are a cheery garnish. The very young leaves are also edible raw but that’s iffy as they contain some of the glycoside Phillyrin, and it’s debatable just how nasty that is. Very young leaves have also been added to soups. As you can see the key is “very young leaves.” I suspect we know these things because some folks in were very hungry for anything green in the spring after long winters. Forsythia is part of the same family as the olive tree. It also produces a fruit after flowering. This is something I haven’t noticed before but I will be looking for the fruit this year, after the flowers have died off. Forsythia comes in eleven different varieties. The most common is the ornamental grown Forsythia x intermedia . The variety, forsythia suspensa, is listed as one of the 50 Fundamental Herbs in Chinese medicine. Along with F. viridissima the Forsythia suspensa was the early species brought to the western countries. F.suspensa is a weeping variety that often roots it’s limbs to the ground. Just like olive oil, forsythia contains the plant lignan, pinoresinol. These lignan food chemicals are important as antioxidants for our body.
