Pacific Ponderosa Pine. Pinus ponderosa. Western Yellow Pine. Two year old tree in nursery pot. Fairly common tree here in Oregon. Native to the mountain area of British Columbia down to Mexico and as far east as North Dakota and Texas. They are quite hardy and can thrive in a variety of climates (seam like they are happiest frozen stiff). Large evergreen conifer 60-125' tall and 25-30' spread with narrow pyramidal growth habit that becomes irregular with age. Can live to be 600 years old Needles- fragrant, long 5-10", rigid dark green that form in tufts of three Cones- harder prickly, 3-6" Bark- when young dark brown and matures to scaly orangish brown Prefers 6 or more hours of direct sun daily and moist well draining deep soil Wants to be wet the first two years after planting. Tolerate to alkaline soil and drought when mature Not tolerate to shade, flooding or poorly draining soil USDA Hardiness Zones 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a & 7b
