Common Tansy, Tanasetum Vulgare, mature medicinal plant with a good root system. During summer months, leaves will be trimmed. This will help the plant survive the heat during its transportation by the US Postal Service. These plants require very little care. They rapidly reach their mature height of approx. 3 ft. During November-March these are mostly roots with little or no leaves. New bright-green leaves appear at the end of March (in Virginia). Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) is a perennial, herbaceous flowering plant of the aster family, native to temperate Europe and Asia. It is also known as bitter buttons, cow bitter, or golden buttons. Tansy is native to Eurasia; it is found in almost all parts of mainland Europe, as well as Britain and Ireland. The ancient Greeks may have been the first to cultivate it as a medicinal herb. In the sixteenth century it was considered to be "necessary for a garden" in Britain. Tansy has also been cultivated and used for its insect repellent. During the American colonial period, meat was frequently rubbed with or packed in tansy leaves to repel insects and delay spoilage. It should repel mosquitoes known for transmitting viruses.
